About this print
Indianapolis map poster
Indianapolis sits near the center of Indiana, laid out in 1821 around a mile-square grid with diagonal avenues cutting across it toward a central circle. That plan still shapes how the city reads from above: an orderly street grid interrupted by those long diagonals, the loop of I-465 drawn around the edge, and the White River bending through the west side while Fall Creek and Pleasant Run thread in from other directions. For a city often described as a crossroads, the geometry is unusually legible.
People tend to know Indianapolis through movement. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in the enclave town of Speedway, has hosted the Indianapolis 500 each May for more than a century. The Monon Trail runs north out of the city on an old rail corridor, and the Cultural Trail links downtown neighborhoods on foot and by bike. Add the interstates converging from every direction and a map of Indianapolis becomes a picture of routes meeting rather than a static street plan.
A print like this suits someone with a specific attachment to the place: years spent downtown or in Broad Ripple or Fountain Square, a college stretch, a race run here, or simply a hometown worth keeping on a wall. Seeing a familiar city reduced to its lines and waterways tends to bring back the parts that maps leave out, which is most of why these hang in hallways and offices. It is made as decorative art rather than something to navigate by, and it reads well alongside prints of other places that matter to the same person.
