Fort Lauderdale is a city shaped by water. It sits on Florida's Atlantic coast in Broward County, where the New River winds through downtown and a long web of residential canals has earned it the nickname "Venice of America." Boats are as much a part of daily life as cars, and many streets end at a dock rather than a cul-de-sac.
