About this print
Huntsville map poster
Huntsville sits in the Tennessee Valley of north Alabama, with Monte Sano Mountain rising along its eastern edge and the Tennessee River running to the south. Over the decades it has grown from a cotton and textile town into the place widely known as the Rocket City, home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. That mix of old Southern town and engineering hub gives the city a character all its own, from the downtown blocks around Big Spring Park to the newer neighborhoods spreading out across the valley.
This print presents Huntsville as a street map in the Blackline style, one of the RadMaps design editions. It turns the city's grid and winding roads into a graphic piece of wall art that reads as a design first, with the shape of the place carrying the composition rather than a lot of extra detail. It is meant to be enjoyed on a wall, not used to find a way across town.
A city map like this tends to mean the most to people with a real connection to it: someone who grew up in Madison County, an engineer who moved for a job on the Arsenal, a family that spent weekends hiking Monte Sano, or a graduate of one of the local universities who has since moved away. It works in a living room, a home office, or a hallway, and makes a thoughtful housewarming or going-away gift for anyone who has called Huntsville home, even for a few years.
