The Marathon de Paris covers 42.2 kilometres on a course that has long run from the Champs-Élysées out to the eastern edge of the city and back through the west. Runners pass Place de la Bastille, loop through the woodland of the Bois de Vincennes, return along the Seine with the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower nearby, and finish near the Bois de Boulogne on Avenue Foch. It is a race that spends almost all of its distance inside the city itself, which is part of why the shape of the route is so recognisable to anyone who has run it or stood along it.
