About this print
Rochester map poster
Rochester sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York, a city shaped by water. The Genesee River runs north through its center on the way to the lake, dropping over High Falls right in the middle of downtown, and the old Erie Canal helped turn it into one of the country's early boomtowns. This Blackline edition renders the city as a street map, a way of seeing Rochester as a whole: the grid and curve of its roads, the river cutting through, the neighborhoods that fan out toward the suburbs and the lakeshore.
Rochester has a long history as a place where things got made and ideas took hold. It is closely tied to the story of photography through Eastman Kodak, and it was home to Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, both of whom are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. It is also known as the Flower City, with Highland Park and its lilacs drawing crowds each spring. People who grew up here, went to school here, or built a life here tend to carry a specific map of the city in their heads, and this print is a quiet way to put that map on the wall.
The Blackline style keeps the focus on line and structure, which suits a city with this much layered history. It works as a gift for someone who has moved away and misses the place, or as a piece for a home or office close to the river. Like every RadMaps poster, it is meant as decorative art rather than a navigation tool, a portrait of Rochester to look at rather than to steer by.
