About this print

Rochester map poster

Rochester sits along the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York, a city shaped by water. The Genesee River runs north through its center, dropping over High Falls before heading out to the lake, and the old Erie Canal helped turn the place into a busy industrial town in the nineteenth century. That history still shows in the way the streets meet the river and spread outward into neighborhoods with their own character. This print captures Rochester as a street map, rendered in the Painted Survey style, a soft, painterly take on the city's layout that sits comfortably on a wall without demanding attention.

For anyone who grew up here, studied here, or spent a few years calling the Flower City home, a map like this can hold a lot of memory: summer evenings near the lake, the lilacs in Highland Park in spring, long winters that bring everyone indoors. Rochester is also known as the longtime home of Kodak and as a place with deep roots in photography, optics, and music, which gives the city a quietly creative reputation that suits a piece of art.

The Painted Survey edition is a visual design style, chosen to give the city's grid and curves a gentle, textured feel. It works well in a living room, a home office, or a hallway, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a graduate, a new homeowner, or someone who has moved away and misses upstate New York. It is meant purely as decorative art, a way to keep a familiar place close, not a tool for finding the way across town.
