About this print

Rome Marathon map poster

The Rome Marathon covers 42.16 km through the middle of one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with about 231 m of climbing spread across the route. That number sounds modest, and it is, but the course is rarely flat for long: central Rome sits across a cluster of low hills, and the short rises and drops between them add up over the second half. The surface is part of the story too. Long stretches of the historic centre are paved in the small basalt cobbles Romans call sampietrini, and runners who have finished here tend to remember them in their legs as clearly as they remember the sights.

The race begins and ends near the Colosseum, which means the first kilometre and the last one both unfold in sight of a two-thousand-year-old amphitheatre. Between them the course threads through the compact historic core, close to the Tiber and the layered city that has grown along it, before returning to where it started. Few marathons are run through so much visible history in such a small area.

This edition reduces the whole course to a single red line against the city, the kind of shape that reads as an abstract drawing from across a room and as a specific morning in Rome up close. It suits a finisher who wants the day on the wall, or anyone who has spent time walking those streets. Made as art for display rather than for navigation.
