Kickapoo State Recreation Area sits just west of Danville in Vermilion County, on ground that was strip-mined for coal before it was reclaimed as public land. That history is why the riding feels different from most of central Illinois: instead of flat farm section lines, there are abrupt spoil-pile climbs, short steep drops, and dozens of deep ponds left behind in the old cuts. The Middle Fork of the Vermilion River runs through the area, and the terrain above it gives the singletrack its rhythm of quick punchy efforts rather than long sustained grades.

The mapped network traced in this edition covers 41.7 miles, with roughly 8,190 feet of climbing gathered a few dozen feet at a time. Riders who know the place tend to measure a day here in laps and link-ups rather than a single out-and-back, stitching loops together until the legs give out. Seen all at once, the whole system reads as a tangle doubling back on itself between water and ravine, which is a fair picture of how a long Saturday there actually goes.
