Kickapoo State Recreation Area sits just west of Danville in east-central Illinois, on ground that was mined for coal long before it became a park. What the mining left behind is the reason the riding is good: ridges, abrupt little ravines, and dozens of deep water-filled pits scattered through second-growth woods above the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River, Illinois' only National Scenic River. The mapped network here runs 20.7 miles with roughly 3,780 feet of climbing, which surprises people who expect flat prairie and instead get short, punchy climbs, root-laced descents, and switchbacks that keep coming.

A map of a trail system reads differently than a map of a single route. It holds every loop and connector at once, so a rider looking at it can trace the combinations built over a season of Saturday mornings: the warmup lap, the long version when there's daylight, the section that always rides harder than it looks.
