Wausau 24 map poster

Twelve and a tenth miles doesn't sound like much until it's ridden again, and again, through an afternoon, a sunset, and the slow gray hours before dawn. That's the arithmetic behind the Wausau 24 lap: a loop in the forested country around Wausau, Wisconsin, with roughly 800 feet of climbing packed into each circuit. Nothing on it is long enough to break a rider outright. The lap does its work by repetition, trading the same rollers, the same turns, and the same short climbs back and forth until legs and memory start keeping separate records.

This is central Wisconsin singletrack terrain, shaped by glaciers and grown over in hardwood and pine, with the Wisconsin River running through town and Rib Mountain rising just southwest of it. Riders who have done the event know how the loop changes character by the hour: fast and social in daylight, narrow and strange under a headlight, oddly generous once the sun comes back up. Solo or on a team, the shape of the course becomes familiar in a way few rides ever manage.

A map of that lap reads differently once it's been ridden a dozen times. The distance and the climbing are there as plain numbers, but what the line holds is the night itself: the pit transitions, the lap counts chalked up, the rider waiting in the dark for a teammate's light to appear. It suits a garage wall, a workshop, or a spot near the bikes, and it's made as artwork rather than anything to navigate by.
