Oakland sits on the east side of San Francisco Bay, a city of hills, flatlands and waterfront that many people know from the inside out: a first apartment near Lake Merritt, Saturday mornings around the lake's loop, a commute through the Bay Bridge traffic, an evening in the hills looking back across the water.
