About this print

Spokane map poster

Spokane sits in eastern Washington, a city built around the river that shares its name. The Spokane River runs through the heart of downtown, dropping over the falls that gave the city its early start as a mill town and still draw people to the water's edge in spring. Riverfront Park hugs the river through the center of town, and the streets fan out from there toward the South Hill, across to the North Side, and out toward the Spokane Valley. It is a place where the river, the bridges, and the street grid all seem to be in conversation with one another.

This print renders Spokane's street map in the Painted Survey style, a design approach that pairs the order of a city plan with a softer, more painterly feel. The result reads as a portrait of the city's shape rather than a tool for getting around it, something to hang on a wall and look at over time.

For anyone who grew up in Spokane, went to school there, moved away, or recently settled in, a map of the city can carry a lot of quiet meaning. Neighborhoods where a first apartment was, the drive home along familiar streets, afternoons near the falls. It also makes a thoughtful gift for someone who holds the Inland Northwest close, whether they still live there or think about it from somewhere else. As a piece of decorative art, it brings a sense of place into a home, an office, or a reading corner, and gives people something to point to when the conversation turns to where they are from.
