About this print
Richmond map poster
Richmond is a city shaped by its river. The James runs right through it, tumbling over rocks and rapids in a stretch where kayakers and anglers share the water within sight of downtown office towers. Around that river the capital of Virginia spreads out in a mix of old and new: brick rowhouses and front porches in the Fan, the steep streets and long views of Church Hill, the shops and restaurants of Carytown, and the government buildings and older blocks near the center of town. It is a place with deep history and a lively present, where long-standing institutions sit alongside newer breweries, galleries and music venues.
This print presents Richmond as a street map in the Cartouche style, turning the city's grid and curving riverside roads into a piece of wall art. It suits someone who grew up here, moved here and stayed, or left and still thinks of it as home. A map of familiar streets has a way of bringing back specific memories: a first apartment, a favorite walk, the route to a friend's house, a summer afternoon down by the water.
As a gift, it works for a housewarming, a graduation from one of the city's universities, or a send-off for someone heading somewhere new. In an office or living room it starts conversations about where people have lived and which neighborhood they love most. It is meant as decoration rather than a guide for getting around, a way to keep a well-loved city in view every day.
