About this print

Winston-Salem map poster

Winston-Salem is a city built from two towns. The older half grew from Salem, a Moravian settlement whose brick buildings, orderly streets, and craft traditions still shape the city's sense of itself. The younger half, Winston, became a center of tobacco and textile manufacturing, and the old factory buildings and warehouses that industry left behind are now part of how downtown looks and feels. Set in the rolling Piedmont of North Carolina, the city keeps both histories close together. That is part of why so many people stay attached to it long after they leave.

This poster is a street map of Winston-Salem in the Neon Night edition, a design style that renders the city's grid and curves in bright, electric color against a dark ground. The look suits a place that has spent the last few decades turning old industrial blocks into restaurants, studios, and apartments. It reads as a city after dark, lit up and still moving, rather than as a sepia keepsake. As decorative art, it is meant for a wall, not a glovebox.

It makes a fitting gift for a Wake Forest graduate, someone who grew up within sight of the old tobacco smokestacks, or anyone who has made a home in the Twin City and wants a reminder of it in the living room or office. For people who moved away, a street map tends to bring back specific memories: a commute, a first apartment, a favorite place to eat. The Neon Night treatment gives those memories a bolder, more contemporary frame than a traditional city print.
