About this print
Washington, D.C. map poster
Washington, D.C. was laid out on purpose, and it shows. Broad diagonal avenues cut across a grid of lettered and numbered streets, meeting at circles and squares that give the city its distinctive shape. The Potomac and Anacostia rivers frame the city to the south, and the open sweep of the National Mall runs through its center between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. It is a capital known for monuments and museums, but also for the rowhouse blocks, corner markets, and neighborhood parks where most of the city's daily life actually happens.
This print renders the city's street map in the Neon Night style, a dark palette with bright, glowing lines that reads like a city seen after sundown. The look suits a place that so often appears in photographs as white marble under daylight; here the street plan itself takes the spotlight, with that famous geometry of avenues and circles coming through as pattern and light. It works as a piece of graphic art on its own, even for someone who has never set foot in the District.
For anyone who has lived in D.C., studied there, worked a first job on the Hill, or simply walked the Mall on a long summer evening, a map of the city can hold a lot of memory. This poster makes a fitting gift for a recent transplant, a departing friend, or a longtime resident who still loves the place. It is meant for the wall as decorative art, not for finding the way to the nearest Metro stop.
